Short Takes

Short Takes is a recurring feature in the ESR magazine: a “look what I found” grab bag of capsule reviews, rarely associated by a theme. It can consist of genre films, lesser-known “auteur” pieces, classics dating back to the silent era, you name it.

Way back in 2001, this column was originally named The Analog Video Enthusiast, as it was devoted to titles viewed on good old VHS (whether they were rentals, or titles purchased at clear-out sales intended to make shelf space for DVD). But it soon changed to Short Takes, to include viewings on DVD and even revival screenings.

It is fitting that Short Takes lives again for the “new” ESR. Times have changed since the previous print run, and this column will reflect that. In addition to DVD or Blu-ray rentals (yes, we still rent!), or stuff we’ve had lying around for review in the mighty ESR archives, we’ll also include viewings on streaming platforms like Tubi or YouTube.

It is the most fun section to write, as pretty much anything goes. Hope you enjoy it!
